| Frequently
Asked Questions |
Is the treatment painful?
Certain areas of the body are more sensitive then others,
therefore the sensations associated with the treatment can
vary. The insertion of the needle is not felt, but the action
of the current may produce minor discomfort. Most patients
say they feel a slightly tingly, warm sensation.
What are the after-effects of the treatment?
Electrolysis may result in a slight reddening or minor swelling
of the skin. These effects are temporary and depend on the
length of time of the treatment, as well as the patient’s
skin type and tolerance. The final result – beautiful,
permanently hair-free skin will be the lasting effect!
How long does it take to achieve permanent results?
A continuing series of treatments over a period of time
is necessary to achieve successful results. The rapidity
with which one achieves permanent results varies in relation
to the area being treated, skin and hair texture, density
of the hair and whether hair is close or scattered.
Hormonal changes and medications may also be a factor.
Prior use of temporary measures such as waxing or tweezing
will also affect the total length of treatment time.
What about electronic tweezers?
These devices do not remove hair permanently. According
to the FDA “…We have not seen any scientifically
valid data which establishes differences between energized
tweezers and plain tweezers.”
Any label representation or suggestions that the device
will accomplish permanent hair removal misbrands the device
and may place it in violation of the law.
What causes abnormal hair growth?
Excess body hair is often the result of normal biological
changes in life, such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause.
Excess hair may also be due to heredity, certain medications
(such as birth control pills) or stress.
Abnormal hair growth may also be associated with a malfunction
of the endocrine system which triggers irregular menstrual
cycles, or an overactive thyroid gland which produces excess
androgen hormones.
Can hair be removed from anywhere on the body?
The most common areas requiring electrolysis include the
hairline, eyebrow, cheeks, upper lip, chin, neck, underarms,
breasts, buttocks, bikini line and legs. Some areas on men
include between the brows, beard, cheekbones, back, collar
line and the tops of the ears and nose.
Is electrolysis unsafe?
No. The amount of current generated is infinitely small.
Physicians often recommend electrolysis to those concerned
about superfluous hair.
Does electrolysis cause scarring?
No. Actually the texture of the skin will be left smoother
upon completion of treatments, once hair has been removed
from the follicle.
Are all hairs eliminated in one treatment?
Some regrowth plus undergrowth will be experienced over
a period of time. Deep, coarse hairs cannot always be immediately
eliminated, especially if they were previously waxed or
tweezed.
Breaking down the hair cells in a series of treatments
may only partially destroy the hair matrix, after which
the cells will produce finer hair in 6-8 weeks. The treatment
will need to be repeated until all of the cells are destroyed.
Should any precautions be taken following treatments?
At the end of your treatment, Sharon will recommend post-treatment
care. It is also important that you avoid direct sunlight
during the following 48 hour period.
What is the normal growth cycle of a hair?
Hairs on various parts of the body have different growth
cycles. A hair will grow for its usual cycle and then naturally
shed itself, followed by a dormant period.
Since it is only possible to treat visible hairs with electrolysis,
some hairs will eventually reappear after dormancy. It can
take up to 6 months for all of the hair to appear on the
skin.
